Infantry only is perfectly viable provided you make sure you keep enough mounts in your inventory to keep your speed up, too many will slow you down so about 1 per soldier does the trick. Sturgian heavy spear and axe infantry are apparently the best in the game but vlandian is apparently the worst. Horse archer only army is amazing.

Vlandia is the best for roughly that army composition. Use roughly 75% t3+ Vlandian Crossbowmen and 25% Vlandian Cavalry. If you want to stay one faction I would recommend empire. Maybe not the best unit in each role, but empire has solid troops in each department.

It might be based on party size but you can check the numbers in the bottom right of the UI. Really the biggest factor is party size. Culture and a lot of perks impact speed. Time of day matters. 1to1 horses - infantry. Party size matters most. A party of 200 horse archers moves with 5.7 at max and catches everything.

But if you’re looking for a shield infantry for anti cav. I’d recommend the sturgian heavy axe. The spear is good too but I think the axe is a little better especially against the more stay-put-and-swing type cavalry like the cataphract. Best cav : Cataphracts and Druzhinnik are at about the same lvl of performance. However, the real best cav unity is the Khan's guard. Glaive is op. My party is composed of roughly 100 Fians, 100 Druzhinnik as a mobile infantry and about 80-100 khan's guards. Moreover, I have 300 medecine with minister of health.
